We went to a rock & mineral show with our homeschool group. The first thing we did was a short class on identifying minerals. Each kid got an egg carton of different minerals and a flow chart to help them figure out what each of them were. They each got a piece of glass to test if it scratched the glass and then a scratch plate to see what color streak it left. Some more questions would then help them identify each mineral.

It's an annual show by the Wichita Gem & Mineral Society - http://www.wgmsks.org/educator.htm
The kids love rocks & had a great time. Definitely something to do if you do a rock study.
